Fifth through Eighth Grade

During the fifth through eighth grades, students are expected to develop strong comprehension skills. They should be able to read with fluency and expression. They are able to utilize reading strategies to support their understanding. Expanding vocabulary is crucial at this age. Students at this level should be able to read independently for an extended amount of time. They also learn to cite textual evidence, evaluate information, and write effective summaries. They have moved beyond basic reading and are now analyzing texts. Fifth through eighth graders can utilize reading for learning and pleasure. By eighth grade, students should be able to read 150-204 words per minute.
