Third and Fourth Grade

As children enter third and fourth grade, they are transitioning from "learning to read" to "reading to learn". They begin making inferences, identifying themes, and connecting reading to previous knowledge. They are developing proficiency in decoding words, self-correcting as necessary. They are able to engage with increasingly complex texts, reading with fluency, accuracy. Reading is expanded to include various genres and nonfiction texts, and they begin utilizing research skills and technology. They should be able to express their understanding verbally and in writing.
